Earning my water wings

I am now 3 months old and have been 'oot and aboot' since my vaccinations three weeks ago, exploring the neighbourhood that I live in and getting to know a few of the local folk and their two legged friends whilst out on their daily walks.

PapaJohn and Mamma have been quite keen to introduce me to water and I suppose seeing as I live close to the sea and have a beach to play on right outside my front door, it would be a good idea to have a wee paddle and perhaps learn how to swim.

It wouldn't be so bad if PJ and Ma came in for a paddle too - but they are wrapped up to their eyeballs in their coats, hats & scarves as well as wellie boots and have absolutely no idea how COLD the water is at this time of year. This isn't St. Tropez in the middle of summer you know.

Well I've kept them both happy and amused most of the time, dipping in my paws and splashing along the beach. But yesterday I earned my water wings most unexpectedly.PJ, Ma and me went over the hills to the wee beach at the back - I was in doggie heaven running off the leash through the bracken and scrub, pretending to flush out the birds in the grass. Ma had bought me a new squeaky ball to fetch and retrieve and when we got down onto the beach we had a game of fetch that included going into the water.

Unfortunately the tide was going out and the ball started to drift out to sea - it was a bit beyond my reach and I wasn't going in any further - no way! PJ ran along the rocks and up on to the old pier trying to reach the ball before it floated out completely; I thought I would give PJ a helping paw (he's getting on a bit now you know). What I didn't know was that this was going to be more than a wee paddle - it ended up as a big splash and before I knew it, it was either doggie paddle time or sink time.

Well what do you know - I can swim!

The water was FREEZING and so with all four paws paddling at full steam ahead I made my way back to the rocks and heaved myself up the rocks, over the seaweed and back onto dry land. Whew!

PJ & Ma were dancing around all excited, patting and stroking me, telling me what a clever girl I was.

Anyone would think I had done something really special. They never seem to get so excited when I pee on the floor.
